“The hardest part for me was not knowing how long the birth was going to be.”

Our baby RenKai Bishop was born on the 28th of August and weighs a healthy 7lbs 5oz. His birth was rather unexpected, as he came at 37+4 weeks! We only just about got a bag ready by then.

My water broke (just like the movies) on 37+3. My contractions had not started by then. They told me that they booked for an induction in 24 hours time. At which point, both of us pushed back hard on. We said that we were happy to come in for extra monitoring, but unless there was a medical reason, we would like to wait 48 hours before starting induction. Thanks to the hypnobirthing classes, we felt comfortable with our decision.

Anyway, as it turns out, there was no need to have insisted on the 48 hours rather than 24 hours to wait, as my contractions started shortly after, and RenKai was came out in the birthing pool within 5.5 hours. It was fairly intense! I definitely had moments where I was wanting an epidural. The hardest part for me was not knowing how long the birth was going to be.

The staff and midwife at Lotus Birth centre were all encouraging and very supportive of our birth preferences, and we were very happy with how everything went.
