This week in Diving Deeper - the mindfulness course I host - we explored the notion of Beginners Mind.

It’s an attitude that supports living mindfully by encouraging us to see people, situations and ourselves with fresh eyes and open up possibilities previously unseen.

It was v timely for me as  I started a practical philosophy course in wisdom a couple of weeks ago with the @schoolofphilosophyuk and realised this week I had already taken the stance of “I know this” with certain aspects of the homework 🙄😂.

I love this quote from Rilke… “live the questions” 

How often do we allow ourselves to do that in this world that values the expert and to say “I don’t know” is viewed as failure?

When I teach mindfulness and hypnobirthing classes the dynamic of teacher / student implies a certain ‘expertness’ and yet I learn so much from participants.

So the balance is this: holding the knowledge of "experience" (rather than being an expert) and staying open to being a beginner.

To what or whom could you bring fresh eyes today? See your partner, child, parent as they actually are in this moment, rather than through the lens of what you think you know about them.

Approach your work with an openness that allows for new ideas.

Look at a tree or flower as if you were an alien who had never seen such a thing before…

Are you open to experimenting with a beginners mind this weekend?

In Asian languages, the word for mind and the word for heart are usually the same, we cannot fully understand the word mindfulness in English without simultaneously hearing or feeling the word heartfulness. They are one and the same. Thus, the meditative cultivation of mindfulness, whether formally or informally, involves intentionally, as best we can, bringing an openhearted and affectionate attention to our experience. 

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT, typically pronounced as the word "act") is a mindfulness based form of psychotherapy. 

It is an empirically based psychological intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies along with values based behaviour-change strategies to increase psychological flexibility.

Together we practice recognising what’s happening in mind, body and soul. Rather than push away, dodge, numb the difficult emotions and thoughts we bring a kindly curiosity and spirit of compassion. Perhaps counter intuitively this non-striving for change actually allows change.

Through this mindfulness practice and by clarifying your personal values, we bring more vitality and meaning to life.

Summer Solstice Sound Bath 🌞

The summer solstice officially marks the beginning of the astronomical summer and traditionally fell between the planting and harvesting of crops, offering people who worked the land time to relax. 

Join me in Seagrave as we take the opportunity of the summer solstice to ‘stand still’; to find inner stillness in the midst of activity, light, celebration, change.

Weaving words and ceremony I will guide you into a full sound bath experience. We’ll calm and relax the body and different sounds and frequencies are introduced in succession bathing you in resonance. The sounds are created by a variety of overtone-emitting instruments including Tibetan and quartz crystal singing bowls, chimes, gong and percussion instruments.

Nothing is required of you, the sounds created during a Sound Bath are an invitation into a deeper state of consciousness, an opportunity to unplug from every day life. Each session is different, depending on your own needs and energy in that moment. 

All you have to do is lie back and breathe.
